Many pets are unable to wear out their claws properly due to the conditions in which they are kept, making claw care by the pet owner or vet necessary. Guinea pigs, for example, often need to have their claws trimmed with the help of claw clippers or claw nippers, as the animals are usually kept on soft bedding and the constantly growing claws do not wear down and shorten automatically on the soft surface as they would in their natural habitat.

Cats only need to have their claws trimmed using claw nippers and scissors if they are no longer able to shorten them themselves by scratching trees, scratching furniture or similar due to illness or old age.

Dogs always need to have their claws trimmed if they walk on surfaces that are too soft or are simply too short. If the claws are the right length, they touch the ground little or not at all. Dog owners usually notice whether they need to be trimmed when the dog makes clicking noises on parquet or tiled floors.

The following applies to all animals: if the claws become too long, they can lead to misalignment of the paws and pain and, in the worst case, can even become ingrown and cause bleeding. To prevent this, they should be checked regularly.

When shortening the claws, it is important to keep a sufficient distance from the animated part, which can be recognized by its pink color. Nerves and blood vessels run through this area and a distance of 2-3 mm should be kept from them.

Whether claw scissors or claw nippers are used to shorten the claws depends on the size and condition of the claw. It makes sense to limit the cutting length to prevent accidental over-shortening. This can be useful for animals with dark claws, for example.

In addition to claw clippers and nippers, there are also nail files and nail clippers that are used to grind down the claws of dogs and cats instead of clipping them off. This slow approach to the optimum claw length reduces the risk of injury to the blood vessels and nerves that run through the claw.

Included in the set:

- Nail file, length: 16cm
- Nail clippers, length: 10cm
